The beginning of 2024 has witnessed a series of exciting technological breakthroughs in the global jade appraisal field. With the deep integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and high-precision spectroscopic analysis, traditional appraisal methods are undergoing a complete revolution, especially in the authentication of high-end jades such as Type A jadeite and Hetian jade. The accuracy has reached an unprecedented level.
For a long time, jade appraisal, particularly the determination of “Type A” jadeite, has heavily relied on the experience of senior experts and visual inspection, supplemented by traditional physical detection methods like UV fluorescence and infrared spectroscopy. In the latest research from the joint laboratory of the National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC) in Shenzhen and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Tsinghua University, an AI-assisted appraisal system based on deep learning has attracted widespread attention from the industry. This system, trained on over 50,000 high-resolution jade images, spectral data, and historical appraisal results, can autonomously learn and identify key features of jade, such as micro-structure, color distribution, and internal inclusions. Dr. Li Ming, a senior researcher at NGTC and project leader, stated: “We utilize Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) technology for in-depth analysis of features like crystal structure, filler traces, and coloration mechanisms in jadeite. In internal tests over the past six months, the system’s average identification accuracy for untreated (Type A) and acid-washed, resin-filled (Type B) jadeite has reached 95.8%, significantly exceeding the average level of traditional methods.”
Spectroscopy: Evolution from Fingerprints to Genes
Meanwhile, high-precision Laser Raman Spectroscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) technology are playing increasingly vital roles in jade composition analysis. In the Hetian jade producing areas of Xinjiang, Professor Wang Qiang's team from the Xinjiang Bureau of Geology and Mineral Exploration and Development has achieved rapid traceability of Hetian jade origins using portable EDXRF equipment. Professor Wang pointed out: “By analyzing the unique 'fingerprints' of trace elements in jade, such as the content ratios of elements like Cr, Ni, and Mn, we can preliminarily determine the origin of Hetian jade within minutes, for example, distinguishing Russian material, Qinghai material, and local Xinjiang material, with an accuracy of 92%.” This technology is expected to combat origin fraud at the source.

The application of these new technologies will undoubtedly have a profound impact on the global jade market. New generations of counterfeiting techniques are also constantly evolving, such as using nanomaterials for filling and novel dyes, which demand continuous iteration and upgrading of appraisal technologies.
