【Market Analysis】
April 15, 2024, Beijing – After experiencing market fluctuations and adjustments in recent years, the field of Hetian jade collection and investment is showing new vitality and trends. The latest “Q1 2024 China Hetian Jade Market Analysis Report” released by the Global Jade Network Think Tank indicates that the market performance of high-end, exquisite Hetian jade is particularly striking, with its rarity and profound cultural value becoming the core factors driving price increases.
The report shows that as of the end of March 2024, the price of high-quality rough jade seeds in the primary market increased by approximately 15%-20% year-on-year. Notably, “old mine material” and “mutton fat jade” originating from the source of the Yulong Kashi River in Xinjiang’s Hetian region saw increases exceeding 30%. Professor Zhang Ming, a senior expert in the jade department of Beijing Rongbaozhai, stated: “Currently, there is strong demand in the market for truly rare and perfectly conditioned Hetian jade seeds. While the prices of ordinary materials remain stable, the prices of fine pieces continue to rise, indicating that collectors and investors have a more mature understanding of value.”
Rarity as a Hard Currency, Origin Traceability Becomes a Focus
The rarity of Hetian jade is the cornerstone of its value. With strict restrictions on jade mining in the Xinjiang region, the output of high-quality Hetian jade seeds has decreased year by year. According to data released by the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Department of Natural Resources, the legal mining volume of Hetian jade seeds in 2023 decreased by about 40% compared to 2018. This data directly leads to tight market supply, pushing up the prices of fine Hetian jade. Mr. Li Hua, head of the jade department at Shanghai Jiade Auction House, mentioned in an interview: “We found that Hetian jade seeds with clear origin certificates, especially those certified by authoritative institutions, have significantly higher auction success rates and premium rates than other categories. For example, at a spring auction held in Shanghai in March this year, a 210-gram Hetian mutton fat jade seed rough stone was finally sold for 1.85 million RMB, far exceeding its estimated price of 1.2 million RMB, with a premium rate of up to 54%. The buyers were mainly experienced collectors and institutional investors from the Yangtze River Delta region.”
Cultural Value Empowerment, Emphasizing Both Artistry and Craftsmanship
In addition to the inherent rarity of the material, the profound cultural connotations and exquisite carving craftsmanship of Hetian jade also add unique investment value. Wang Jianjun, Vice President of the China Jade Culture Research Association and a renowned jade carving master, believes: “Contemporary Hetian jade collection is not just about pursuing the purity of the material, but also about recognizing jade carving art and cultural heritage. A jade carving piece that embodies the essence of heaven and earth and the ingenuity of artisans has infinite artistic and cultural added value.”
In recent years, masterpieces by carving masters have repeatedly set new highs in the secondary market. For example, the “Auspicious Beast Presenting Prosperity” Hetian jade ornament carved by Master Li Ziming, a national intangible cultural heritage inheritor, was hammered for 26 million Hong Kong dollars at Sotheby’s Hong Kong autumn auction last year, setting a new record for similar works in the past three years. This indicates that investors, while focusing on the jade material itself, are also increasingly valuing the artistry, craftsmanship, and cultural story of jade carving works.
Investment Risks and Opportunities Coexist, Rational Collection is Key
Despite the strong performance of the high-end Hetian jade market, experts also remind investors to be wary of market risks. Counterfeit products, inferior goods passed off as superior, and excessive speculation still exist. Professor Chen Deming, a doctoral supervisor at the School of Gemology, China University of Geosciences (Beijing), suggests: “Before entering the market, investors must strengthen their professional knowledge, choose reputable merchants or auction houses, and conduct scientific appraisals of jade. At the same time, they should establish a long-term investment philosophy, avoid blindly following trends, and be guided by cultural heritage and artistic appreciation to seize opportunities and avoid risks in this market upsurge.”
Looking ahead, with the continuous development of China’s economy and the enhancement of cultural confidence, Hetian jade, as an important carrier of Chinese civilization, is expected to continue to steadily increase in collection and investment value. Rare resource endowments, unique cultural charm, and exquisite craftsmanship will jointly push the Hetian jade market to new heights.
