Sisters, the trend of AI jade appraisal has been really big lately, with various AI appraisal mini-programs and apps popping up on WeChat Moments and Xiaohongshu. As an experienced professional who has been in the jade industry for over ten years, I've always been curious but cautious about these emerging technologies. Today, I want to share my recent first experience with AI appraisal, hoping to provide some real and professional insights for sisters who are still observing!

My First AI Appraisal Experience: Challenging an 'Old Pit Ice Jade'

This time, I specifically chose an 'Old Pit Ice Jade' bangle that I've collected for a long time. I bought this bangle directly from a Myanmar mine at a high price back then. Its quality is very stable, and it comes with a certificate from an authoritative institution. It's safe to say it's my 'anchor' piece. I chose two AI appraisal apps with good market reputation for testing. The operation was simple: just follow the prompts to take a few photos from different angles, upload them, and wait for the results.

App A: Unexpected Results! 😱

About 5 minutes later, App A gave the result: natural jadeite A-grade, with a 'ice glutinous' texture, estimated value range of 50,000-80,000 RMB. Seeing this result, my heart sank. Although it's A-grade, there's a significant difference between 'ice glutinous' and 'ice jade', and the estimated value was clearly too low. Even when the market was not good, the market price of my bangle was at least over 150,000 RMB. This result made me question AI's judgment ability.

App B: Relatively Accurate, but Still Lacking 🤔

Next, I tried App B. This time, the waiting time was slightly longer, about 10 minutes. The result showed: natural jadeite A-grade, with a 'high ice' texture, estimated value range of 120,000-180,000 RMB. This result was closer to reality; at least in terms of texture and estimated value, App B performed significantly better than App A. However, it still failed to identify the characteristics of 'old pit', only broadly categorizing it as 'high ice'.

🔍 Technical Principles and Limitations Behind AI Appraisal 🔍

Why such differences? I researched it in depth. Most AI appraisals on the market today are based on image recognition and big data analysis. They learn from massive amounts of jade image data (including genuine, imitation, B-grade, C-grade, etc.) to identify the color, texture, luster, and structure of jade. It sounds advanced, but there are several core issues in practical operation:

  • Data Quality and Quantity are Key: If the training data lacks sufficient high-quality and comprehensive samples of 'old pit ice jade', AI will find it difficult to accurately identify such subtle differences. Just like App A, it might have more 'ice glutinous' samples in its database, leading to misjudgment.

  • Impact of Lighting and Shooting Angle: The texture and color of jade vary greatly under different lighting and angles. AI currently struggles to fully simulate the human eye's judgment ability in complex lighting environments. A blurry or poorly lit photo is likely to lead AI to an incorrect conclusion.

  • Inability to Perform Physical Testing: This is the biggest flaw of AI appraisal. Human appraisal combined with physical testing (such as density, refractive index, infrared spectroscopy, etc.) can provide the most authoritative conclusion. AI cannot touch physical objects, so it naturally cannot perform these crucial physical tests. It can only remain at the level of 'interpreting images'.

  • Lack of 'Experience': Jade appraisal, especially for jadeite, often relies on the appraiser's 'experience' and 'eye for detail'. For example, judging 'gel-like texture', 'fluorescence', and 'crystal structure' – these subtle feelings are currently difficult for AI to fully capture and understand.

💡 My Professional Advice: AI Appraisal can be an aid, but not fully relied upon! 💡

After this experience, my conclusion is:

* AI appraisal can be a preliminary screening tool: For beginners, if you want to quickly determine if a piece of jade is A-grade or get a rough idea of its texture level, AI appraisal can give you a preliminary reference. Its accuracy in identifying B-grade and C-grade is relatively high.
* For high-value jade, always seek professional appraisal: For jade of higher value and better quality, especially jadeite, I strongly recommend that everyone must obtain a certificate from an authoritative jewelry appraisal institution. For example, NGTC (National Gemstone Testing Center) or GIC (Gemmological Institute of China). These institutions have professional equipment and experienced appraisers who can provide the most accurate and authoritative conclusions.
* Cultivating your own eye is most important: Sisters, instead of pinning your hopes on AI, it's better to observe more, learn more, and handle more. Go to the market more often, communicate more with professionals, and slowly cultivate your own eye. This is the most reliable way to play with jade!

In short, AI appraisal is a manifestation of technological progress, bringing new possibilities to the jade industry. However, currently, it is still in its early stages of development and far from being able to completely replace manual appraisal. A rational perspective and reasonable utilization are the attitudes we jade enthusiasts should have!
