Industry Observation: Jade Auction Market 'Spring Blooms': High-End Jadeite and Hetian Jade Lead, Young Collectors Emerge
[Hong Kong] In the first half of 2024, the global jade auction market showed a significant recovery, particularly in the high-end jadeite and premium Hetian jade segments, where both transaction volumes and success rates were impressive. According to the latest reports from renowned auction houses Christie's and Sotheby's, despite various global economic uncertainties, jade artworks, as a unique hard currency and cultural carrier, have maintained strong investment value and collection appeal.
High-End Jadeite: Scarcity Drives Price Increases
At the recently concluded Christie's Hong Kong Spring Auctions, a 'Imperial Green' natural jadeite bead necklace (estimated at HKD 80 million-120 million) was finally hammered at an astonishing HKD 155 million (approximately USD 20 million), setting a new record for similar items in the past three years. Ms. Shirley Shih, Deputy Chairman of Jewellery & Jadeite at Christie's Asia, stated in an interview: "This fully demonstrates the scarcity of top-tier jadeite and its esteemed position among international collectors. Especially Imperial Green jadeite with rich color, fine texture, and plump beads, its price is almost unaffected by market fluctuations, showing a steady upward trend."
Data shows that in the first half of 2024, a total of 28 jadeite lots with a transaction price exceeding HKD 10 million were sold globally, an increase of 15% compared to the same period last year. Among them, 'Old Pit' glass-type and ice-type jadeite from northern Myanmar mines remain the focus of market pursuit. Mr. Kevin Ching, Head of Jewellery, Sotheby's Asia, added: "We observe that collectors are increasingly valuing the origin, clarity (zongshui), color, craftsmanship, and historical provenance of jadeite, which makes lots with clear traceability information and authoritative appraisal certificates more competitive."
Hetian Jade: Dual Drive of Cultural Value and Investment
Meanwhile, the market for traditional Chinese jade, represented by Xinjiang Hetian jade, also showed strong growth. In the Poly Auction (Beijing Poly International Auction Co., Ltd.) Spring Sale, a 2.5 kg 'Hetian Jade Seed Material Auspicious Beast Handle Piece' (estimated at RMB 12 million-18 million) was sold for an impressive RMB 22 million, far exceeding its upper estimate. Mr. Li Wentao, General Manager of the Chinese Antiques and Fine Art Department at Poly Auction, pointed out: "Hetian jade seed material, especially top-grade material with characteristics like 'white as congealed fat, moist as mutton fat,' has seen its market value steadily increase in recent years. Beyond its scarcity, more importantly, it carries profound Chinese traditional cultural values and exquisite carving artistry."
According to statistics, in the first half of 2024, the total transaction value of Hetian jade across major auction houses nationwide reached RMB 850 million, a year-on-year increase of 18%. Among these, high-quality seed material and works by renowned carvers dominated, with an average premium rate exceeding 35%.
Young Collectors Enter the Market, Optimizing Market Structure
It is worth noting that the entry of a new generation of collectors is injecting new vitality into the jade auction market. According to an internal report by Sotheby's, the participation of buyers under 35 in jade auctions is increasing year by year, currently accounting for about 20% of the total buyer pool, nearly doubling compared to five years ago. These young collectors tend to favor jade pieces with strong design appeal, good wearability, and a certain contemporary artistic style. They not only focus on the material value of jade but also emphasize its cultural connotations and artistic expression. For example, some jadeite jewelry collaborated with famous designers, or Hetian jade carvings incorporating modern aesthetic elements, are highly sought after by young collectors.
"The entry of young collectors not only brings new purchasing power but also promotes the diversification of aesthetics in the jade market," concluded Ms. Shirley Shih of Christie's. "In the future, the jade auction market is expected to find a new balance between tradition and innovation, continuously maintaining its unique charm and investment value."
