Jadeite Auction Market Blooms: High-End Jadeite and Hetian Jade Lead, Young Collectors Emerge as New Highlight
【Industry Observation】
In the first half of 2024, the global jadeite auction market showed a significant recovery, especially in the high-end jadeite and premium Hetian jade sectors, with transaction volumes repeatedly reaching new highs. According to the latest spring auction reports from Christie's and Sotheby's, the total transaction volume for the jadeite segment increased by 18.5% year-on-year, with a particularly prominent contribution from mainland China and Hong Kong.
High-End Jadeite: Rarity and Collection Value Coexist
At the recently concluded Sotheby's Hong Kong Spring Auction, a natural jadeite bead necklace, dubbed 'Imperial Green,' fetched an astounding HKD 320 million, setting a new auction record for jadeite bead necklaces in the past five years. According to Mr. Wen Hao, Head of Jewellery, Asia, Sotheby's, this necklace comprises 37 imperial green jadeite beads, each exceeding 14 mm in diameter, with their color, texture, and integrity reaching museum-grade standards. The buyer was an anonymous private collector from Singapore, once again confirming the strong global appeal of top-tier jadeite.
Furthermore, at the 'Magnificent Jewels and Jadeite' special sale held by Beijing Poly Auction on May 15th, an 'Ice-Type Yang Green Fortune Gourd' jadeite pendant weighing 28.5 grams sold for RMB 180 million, far exceeding its pre-sale estimate. Ms. Li Hua, Head of Poly Auction's Jewellery Department, stated: “The market shows immense enthusiasm for high-quality jadeite with clear provenance. Especially those pieces reaching 'Old Pit Glassy' or 'Ice-Type Yang Green' grades, their value is almost unaffected by market fluctuations, instead continuously rising due to their rarity.”
Hetian Jade: Cultural Heritage and Investment Attributes Highlighted
Unlike jadeite's 'hard currency' attributes, the Hetian jade market more reflects its profound cultural heritage and stable investment attributes. At China Guardian's Shanghai Spring Auction, a 1.5 kg 'Mutton-Fat Jade Seed Material Rough' sold for RMB 56 million to Mr. Wang Ming, a renowned domestic jade carving master. Mr. Wang Ming, in an interview, said: “High-quality Hetian jade seed material, especially mutton-fat jade with skin, is increasingly depleted. Each piece is an irreplaceable natural artwork. They are not only excellent carving mediums but also important symbols of traditional Chinese culture, and their long-term value is self-evident.”
Concurrently, a series of 'Archaic Auspicious Beast' Hetian jade carvings by the famous jade carving artist Mr. Zhang San also achieved impressive results at the Xiling Yinshe Auction in Hangzhou's 'Scholar's Objects' special sale, with multiple pieces selling for more than double their estimates. This indicates that Hetian jade carvings with artistic value and cultural connotations are gaining favor among more collectors.
Young Collectors Enter the Market, Injecting New Vitality
Notably, a gratifying trend emerged in this season's auctions – a significant increase in the proportion of young collectors. Statistics show that buyers under 35 years old accounted for 25% of the total transaction volume in jadeite auctions, an increase of nearly 10 percentage points compared to the same period last year. Their focus on jadeite is no longer limited to traditional value preservation and appreciation; they pay more attention to jadeite's design, artistry, and cultural stories.
For instance, at Bonhams Hong Kong's 'Contemporary Jadeite and Jewellery' special sale, some jadeite and Hetian jade ornaments incorporating modern design concepts, such as the 'Geometric Abstraction' jadeite pendant created by designer Ms. Chen Li, attracted numerous young bidders and ultimately sold for three times their estimate. Ms. Lin Jie, Director of Bonhams Asia Jewellery Department, analyzed: “The popularity of social media and the rise of cultural confidence have led more young people to understand and appreciate jadeite culture. They tend to choose modern jade pieces that can be worn and showcase individuality, which brings new vitality and development directions to the entire market.”
Future Outlook
Overall, the jadeite auction market in the first half of 2024 has shown strong growth momentum. High-end jadeite and premium Hetian jade, as the 'ballast stones' of the market, will continue to maintain high prices due to their rarity and cultural value. At the same time, the rise of young collectors and their pursuit of design and artistry indicate that the jadeite market is developing towards diversification and personalization. It is expected that in the second half of the year, with further economic improvement and recovery of market confidence, the jadeite auction market is likely to continue its steady growth.
