Liangshan Southern Red Agate Raw Material Supply Tightens, Market Prices Poised for Another Surge

Liangshan, Sichuan, October 26, 2023 – Recent developments in the main producing areas of Southern Red Agate in Liangshan, Sichuan, indicate significant changes in raw material extraction dynamics. A deep dive by our correspondent into the production sites reveals a continuous decrease in the output of high-quality Southern Red Agate rough stones. This directly leads to a tightening of market supply and signals a potential new round of price increases for Southern Red Agate.

Southern Red Agate, renowned for its warm texture and rich red hue, has been highly sought after in the jewelry and jade market in recent years. Particularly, Southern Red Agate from the Liangshan region is considered superior due to its pure color and strong gelatinous feel. However, the extraction of this rare gemstone is not inexhaustible. According to insiders from the local mining department, due to years of intensive mining and the gradual depletion of some ore veins, mining points capable of producing high-quality Southern Red Agate have become increasingly scarce.

“In previous years, we could relatively easily find materials of good quality, but now, even with more human and material resources invested, the yield of high-quality rough stones is significantly lower,” admitted Mr. Zhang, a mine owner who has been involved in Southern Red Agate mining in Liangshan for over a decade. “Especially those materials with 'persimmon red' and 'brocade red' hues, which reach collectible standards, are now extremely rare.”

Market data shows that over the past five years, the total market transaction volume of Southern Red Agate has shown an upward trend year by year, with an average annual growth rate of about 15%. Among these, the price increase of high-quality Southern Red Agate has been particularly significant, with some premium-grade Southern Red Agate carvings and bead strings seeing prices multiply several times over. However, with the contraction of supply from the producing areas, this growth momentum may be redefined.

Professor Li Ming, a senior expert from the China Gems & Jewelry Trade Association, stated in an interview: “The scarcity of Southern Red Agate is the core driver of its value. When there is a structural shortage of high-quality raw material supply from the producing areas, a rise in market prices is an inevitable trend. We anticipate that within the next year, the price increase for high-quality Liangshan Southern Red Agate rough stones could reach 10%-20%, while the price increase for finished products at the retail end will also be between 5%-15%.” Professor Li further pointed out that this trend will prompt the market to focus more on the collection value and cultural attributes of Southern Red Agate, rather than merely its decorative use.

This tightening of supply from the producing areas will have a profound impact on the entire Southern Red Agate industry chain. For upstream miners, costs will further increase, and profit margins will face challenges; for midstream processors, the difficulty in obtaining high-quality raw materials will increase, potentially leading some small processing plants to face survival pressure; and for downstream retailers and consumers, it means higher purchase costs and rarer choices.

Looking ahead, the Southern Red Agate market will enter an era that places greater emphasis on quality and scarcity. Investors and collectors should more cautiously evaluate the quality and origin of Southern Red Agate, paying attention to its unique cultural value and artistic connotations. At the same time, the industry also needs to consider how to enhance the added value of Southern Red Agate through innovative design and brand building to cope with the challenges brought by changes in raw material supply. The “flourishing” path of Liangshan Southern Red Agate may become even more precious due to its scarcity.
