Industry Observation

In recent years, driven by the wave of digitalization, the jade industry has witnessed a robust development of e-commerce platforms. From early image-based transactions to current live stream selling, AR try-on, and blockchain traceability, technological innovation is profoundly transforming the circulation and consumption patterns of jade. According to the '2023 China Gem & Jewelry Industry Development Report' released by the Gem & Jewelry Trade Association of China (GAC), online sales of jade products increased by 28.5% year-on-year in 2023, with live streaming e-commerce contributing over 60% of this growth. This data clearly indicates that jade e-commerce is no longer merely a supplement to traditional sales channels but has become a core engine for industry growth.

Taking leading platforms such as 'Feicui Wangchao' (Jadeite Dynasty) and 'Yushi Zhijia' (House of Jade) as examples, they have continuously invested in user experience, supply chain integration, and trust system building. For instance, Feicui Wangchao disclosed in its Q3 2023 financial report that its active user base grew by 35% year-on-year, with daily average live stream viewership exceeding 500,000. Mr. Zhang Ming (pseudonym), a platform representative, stated in an interview with us: “Consumers have a longer decision-making cycle for jade purchases, and trust is key. We have introduced online authentication services from authoritative third-party appraisal agencies like the National Gemstone Testing Center (NGTC) and collaborated with AntChain to explore uploading information such as origin, processing, and authentication of jade to the blockchain, achieving full lifecycle traceability. This has significantly boosted consumer confidence.”

However, rapid development also comes with challenges. Counterfeiting, misrepresentation, and false advertising have troubled jade e-commerce. In response, major platforms have increased their technology investments. For example, the 'Yujian Tong' platform, located in Foshan, Guangdong, collaborated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences' computer vision team to develop an AI-based image recognition system for intelligent evaluation of jade flaws and quality, achieving an accuracy rate of 92%. This system has been adopted by several large jade e-commerce platforms, effectively reducing the cost and error of manual appraisal, and providing more objective references for consumers.

Furthermore, personalized customization services have become a new highlight for jade e-commerce. For example, in Ruili, Yunnan, some jade carving studios connect directly with consumers through e-commerce platforms, offering a one-stop customized service from 'rough stone selection – design communication – carving production – finished product delivery.' This model not only satisfies consumers' pursuit of uniqueness and cultural connotations but also shortens the supply chain and increases profit margins. According to Mr. Li Hua (pseudonym), Secretary-General of the Ruili Gem & Jade Association, the volume of personalized customized orders completed through e-commerce platforms increased by over 40% in 2023.

Looking ahead, the development of jade e-commerce platforms will focus more on technological empowerment and ecosystem construction. Virtual Reality (VR) / Augmented Reality (AR) technologies will become more widespread in jade display and try-on, enhancing the immersive experience of online shopping. Concurrently, with increased national support for the digital economy and the upgrading of consumer demand for cultural consumption, jade e-commerce is expected to embrace broader development space. However, platforms also need to be wary of excessive marketing and homogenized competition, continuously improve service quality, and collectively promote the healthy and sustainable development of the jade industry with craftsmanship and technological innovation.
