【Hong Kong, April 15, 2026】Sotheby's 2026 Spring Sale, which concluded successfully on April 12th, saw a particularly strong performance from its 'Jadeite Splendor: Imperial Qing Dynasty Jades' specialist sale. The total sales reached an impressive HKD 285 million, exceeding the pre-sale estimate by 15%. The sell-through rate by lot was 88%, and by value, it reached an impressive 92%, fully demonstrating the strong resilience and recovery trend of the high-end Qing Dynasty jade market.
The specialist sale featured 65 meticulously selected lots, encompassing various imperial jade objects from the Qianlong period to the late Qing Dynasty, including mountain carvings, censers and vases, scholar's objects, and personal ornaments. The highlight of the sale was undoubtedly a 'Qing Dynasty Qianlong Period White Jade Carved Archaistic Taotie Mask Double-Handle Vase with Loose Rings and Cover,' which fetched an astonishing HKD 82 million, far exceeding its highest estimate of HKD 50 million, becoming the top-selling lot of the session. Acquired by an anonymous Asian collector, its exquisite craftsmanship, warm jade quality, and distinguished provenance made it a highly sought-after piece in the market. Another notable lot, a 'Qing Dynasty Jiaqing Period Celadon Jade Carved Auspicious Beasts Mountain,' sold for HKD 48 million, an increase of 60% from its HKD 30 million estimate, indicating strong collector interest in exquisite mountain carvings.
From a data perspective, the average unit price for this specialist sale reached HKD 4.38 million, an increase of nearly 25% compared to Sotheby's Qing Dynasty jade specialist sale in the same period last year (HKD 3.5 million). All lots estimated above HKD 10 million were sold, with over half achieving prices more than 20% above their estimates. This indicates that top collectors maintain immense enthusiasm and purchasing power for rare, high-quality Qing Dynasty jades.
Mr. Nicolas Chow, Chairman of Sotheby's Asia, Chinese Works of Art, commented after the auction: "The success of this Qing Dynasty jade specialist sale undoubtedly injected a strong shot in the arm for the entire Asian art market. We observe that, against the backdrop of global economic recovery, high-net-worth individuals are gradually regaining confidence in art investment, especially in the field of traditional Chinese art. Collectors are showing unprecedented pursuit of imperial jades with clear provenance, excellent condition, and exquisite craftsmanship. The results of this auction also confirm our judgment on the value of high-end masterpieces in the market; even in the face of macroeconomic uncertainties, true rare treasures can transcend market fluctuations and win the favor of collectors."
Professor Zhang Ming, a senior jade market analyst, pointed out: "The performance of Qing Dynasty jades at this Sotheby's Spring Sale is undoubtedly an important signal of market recovery. Firstly, the significant premium rates for high-priced lots indicate that capital is concentrating on top-tier masterpieces. Secondly, the increase in the sell-through rate, especially the 92% by value, suggests an enhanced overall market absorption capacity. Furthermore, we have noticed that in addition to traditional white jade and celadon jade, some bi-jade and yellow jade pieces with unique skin colors or ingenious carving techniques also achieved good prices. This reflects the diversification of collectors' aesthetic tastes and a deeper understanding of jade materials. It is expected that the Qing Dynasty jade market will continue to maintain steady growth in the next two years, with the investment value of imperial jades from the Qianlong period and earlier continuing to stand out."
Looking ahead, with further global economic stabilization and sustained growth in collector confidence, the high-end Qing Dynasty jade market is poised for a new round of prosperity. Sotheby's stellar performance in this spring sale undoubtedly sets a positive tone for the upcoming spring sales of other international auction houses, signaling the arrival of a vibrant art auction season.
