Hello, fellow jade enthusiasts! I'm Old Zhang, a restorer who has spent most of his life working with jadeite. Over the years, countless pieces of jadeite have passed through my hands, from imperial green heirlooms to cherished items from ordinary families. They might have been damaged due to careless wear or lost their luster due to improper care. Today, I want to talk to you about the daily maintenance of jadeite and share some of my insights gained over the years, hoping to help your jadeite retain its warm and lustrous glow forever.

Scenario Introduction:
I remember many years ago, an old lady tremblingly brought me an ancestral jadeite bangle. That bangle was originally an icy-type with floating flowers, full of clarity. But in front of me, it looked a bit dull, and even the edges had subtle nicks. The old lady said she had always cherished it, but for some reason, the jadeite was not as bright as it was when she was young. At that moment, I deeply understood that even the finest jade, without proper care, would gradually lose its vitality. Jadeite has a spirit; it needs us to nourish it with care, just like an old friend.

Core Techniques:

  • The Art of "Playing" and "Soaking": Jadeite fears dryness the most and loves the nourishment of human oils. Daily wear is the best maintenance. The oils secreted by the human body will penetrate into the tiny crevices of the jadeite, making it more oily and translucent. But the "playing" here is not blind rubbing, but long-term close contact wearing. If the jadeite is not worn for a long time, I would suggest occasionally using a clean soft cloth dipped in a small amount of baby oil (colorless, odorless, mild ingredients) to gently wipe it, then wipe off excess oil with a clean soft cloth, rinse with clean water, and finally pat dry with a soft cloth. This process is like giving the jadeite a "moisturizing mask," effectively preventing it from losing water and becoming dry.

  • Avoid "Hard-on-Hard": Although jadeite has high hardness, its toughness is relatively poor, and it is most afraid of bumps. I have seen too many jadeite pieces with cracks or even breaks due to accidental drops or collisions with hard objects. Therefore, when engaging in strenuous exercise, doing housework (especially washing dishes, moving heavy objects), or sleeping, it is best to remove jadeite jewelry and store it properly. One of my clients once accidentally bumped her jadeite bangle against the edge of the stove while cooking, causing a small chip in the bangle, which she deeply regretted.

  • Keep Away from High Temperatures and Chemicals: High temperatures can cause changes in the internal molecular structure of jadeite, leading to "dehydration," making it dry, and even causing an increase in "cotton" or fading of color. Therefore, do not expose jadeite to direct sunlight for long periods, and certainly do not wear it when taking hot baths or going to saunas. Similarly, various chemical cleaning agents, cosmetics, perfumes, etc., can corrode the surface of jadeite, causing it to lose its luster. Before wearing jadeite, it is best to apply makeup and spray perfume first, and then put it on after the chemical substances have evaporated.

Precautions:

* Proper Cleaning: When cleaning jadeite, simply use clean water and a soft brush (like a toothbrush) to gently scrub, then wipe dry with a clean soft cloth. Avoid using ultrasonic cleaning machines, especially for jadeite with cracks or inlays, as the vibrations of ultrasonic waves may worsen cracks or cause inlays to fall off. I once repaired a jadeite pendant where the inlay had fallen off due to ultrasonic cleaning, and it took a lot of effort to restore it to its original state.
* Careful Storage: When not wearing, jadeite should be stored separately in a soft cloth bag or jewelry box to avoid scratching from friction with other hard objects. Regularly check the storage environment to ensure it is dry and ventilated, preventing dampness and mildew.
* Regular Inspection: Develop the habit of regularly inspecting your jadeite for new cracks, wear, or loose inlays. Once a problem is found, promptly seek professional repair, as small problems can turn into big troubles if left untreated.

Experience Summary:
The maintenance of jadeite lies in perseverance and dedication. It is not a cold object, but a token carrying years and emotions. Just like the jadeite I repair, every grinding, every polishing, is giving them new life. As long as we carefully care for it, your jadeite will surely, like that old lady's bangle, radiate a charming, warm, and jade-like luster after the baptism of time, passed down from generation to generation, endlessly. Remember, the best maintenance is your love and companionship. May everyone's jadeite become a family heirloom, shining brightly!
