Hello, fellow jade enthusiasts! I'm Old Zhang, a restorer who has been working with jade for half a lifetime. Over the years, countless pieces of Hetian jade have passed through my hands, from old mine materials to new ones, from ancient heirloom jades to modern masterpieces. They either bear the marks of time or shine with new luster. Today, I'd like to share my insights into Hetian jade care, based on my years of restoration experience, hoping to help your treasures maintain their warmth and luster forever.

Scenario Introduction:

I remember once, an old gentleman brought me a family heirloom Hetian jade Guanyin. The jade was of excellent quality, but its surface was dull and even showed signs of cracking. The old gentleman was heartbroken and asked if I could restore its former glory. After careful examination, I found that the jade had been stored in a dry environment for a long time, lacking daily handling and cleaning, leading to dehydration and surface oxidation. After my meticulous cleaning, nourishing, and polishing, the Guanyin regained its warm luster, and the old gentleman thanked me profusely. This case further convinced me how crucial proper care is for Hetian jade.

Core Techniques: The "Warm Nourishment" of Hetian Jade

I summarize Hetian jade care as "warm nourishment," which means treating it gently and nourishing it with care. Specifically, there are several aspects:

  • Avoid Bumps and Friction: This is the most basic and important point. Although Hetian jade has high hardness, its toughness is relatively weak, especially for some pieces with flaws, which are more prone to damage from bumps. I've seen too many jade pieces shattered due to accidental drops, and the heartache is hard for others to understand. Therefore, when wearing or handling daily, be careful and avoid contact with hard objects. When storing, it's best to place it separately in a brocade box wrapped in soft cloth.

  • Keep Clean: Dust, sweat, and oil are the "killers" of Hetian jade's luster. If not cleaned for a long time, these dirts will adhere to the jade surface, forming a film that hinders the jade's breathing, causing it to lose its warm feel. My advice is to wipe it regularly with a clean, soft cloth. If the dirt is heavy, you can rinse it with clean water, then gently brush it with a soft-bristled brush. Be careful not to use any chemical cleaners, especially those containing corrosive ingredients. After cleaning, be sure to wipe it dry with a soft cloth to avoid water stains.

  • Moderate Handling: The saying "people nourish jade, jade nourishes people" is not false. The oils and sweat secreted by human skin are natural nourishing agents for Hetian jade. Moderate handling allows the jade to absorb the oils secreted by the human body, forming a patina on its surface, making it warmer and more translucent with more handling. But here I emphasize "moderate"; excessive handling, especially for people with more hand sweat, may instead cause the jade surface to become dull. Before handling, it's best to wash and dry your hands to ensure they are clean.

  • Avoid High Temperatures and Sun Exposure: High temperatures and strong direct sunlight can cause changes in the internal structure of Hetian jade, leading to dehydration, dryness, and even cracks. I once restored a jade plaque that had been placed on a windowsill in direct sunlight for a long time, and its surface had developed fine "burn marks." Therefore, remember not to expose Hetian jade to high temperatures or strong light, and certainly not to soak it in hot water.

  • Maintain Moderate Humidity: An overly dry environment is detrimental to Hetian jade. If not worn or handled for a long time, you can regularly rinse it with clean water, or wipe it with a damp soft cloth, then dry it with a dry cloth, to maintain its moderate humidity and prevent dehydration and cracking.

Precautions:

* Avoid Contact with Chemicals: Perfumes, cosmetics, detergents, and other chemical substances can corrode Hetian jade, causing its surface to lose luster or even undergo chemical reactions. Try to avoid contact when wearing.
* Regular Inspection: Develop the habit of regularly inspecting your jade to check for new bumps, cracks, or dirt, and address problems promptly.
* Professional Restoration: If the jade is severely damaged, do not attempt to repair it yourself. Always seek the help of a professional jade restorer. Improper repair methods may cause secondary damage.

Experience Summary:

Caring for Hetian jade is like nurturing a life; it requires patience, meticulousness, and love. It is not something that happens overnight but a gradual process of warm nourishment. A well-maintained piece of Hetian jade not only retains its original beauty but also, with the passage of time, reveals a deeper, warmer, and more profound charm. I often say that every piece of jade has its own story, and our care is to add new chapters to these stories. I hope my experience can help you better care for your beautiful jade, allowing them to be passed down through generations, shining forever!
