Hello fellow collectors, I'm Old Zhang. I've been involved with jade for thirty years, and from my initial ignorance to my current understanding, jadeite has always been my favorite. Today, let's talk about the maintenance of jadeite. This is not just a simple wipe and wash; there's a lot of knowledge involved.
Scenario Introduction:
I remember when I first started, I acquired an old-pit jadeite bangle with a rich color and a pleasing oily luster. At that time, I was young and impetuous, thinking that good things should be worn to show off. What was the result? Before long, fine scratches appeared on the surface of the bangle, and its luster was greatly diminished. It pained me as if I had lost a piece of myself. Later, I consulted an old master and realized that the essence of jade maintenance lies in 'nurturing' rather than 'destroying.' Since then, I have devoted myself to studying the art of jadeite care and have developed my own set of experiences.
Core Techniques: The 'Three Preventions and Three Avoidances' of Jadeite
- Prevent Bumps: Although jadeite has high hardness, its toughness is relatively poor, especially in areas with fissures or cotton-like inclusions, which are even more fragile. I once had a jadeite handpiece that accidentally slipped from the table and chipped off a small piece. Therefore, when wearing or playing with jade, always avoid collision with hard objects. My practice is to place a soft cloth underneath when taking out or putting away jade pieces. Forming this habit can prevent any mishaps.
- Prevent High Temperature Exposure: The internal structure of jadeite contains water. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause the jade to lose water, making it dry and even developing tiny cracks. I have seen people hang jadeite in their cars for sun exposure, resulting in the jade turning white and losing its original vitality. Therefore, when wearing it in summer, try to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight; when not wearing it, it should be placed in a cool place, away from heat sources.
- Prevent Chemical Corrosion: Sweat, perfume, cosmetics, detergents, and other chemical substances, if in long-term contact, can corrode the surface of jadeite, causing it to lose its luster and even change color. A friend of mine wore a jadeite bangle while washing dishes, and the surface of the bangle became dull. My advice is to always remove jadeite when showering, washing dishes, applying makeup, or spraying perfume. If it comes into contact with sweat, wipe it clean immediately with a soft cloth.
- Avoid Grease: The porous structure of jadeite absorbs grease, which over time can make the jade surface appear dull and affect its transparency. Although some people like to 'play with jade' to allow it to absorb human oils, there are specific ways to do it. For jadeite, clean sweaty hands are best for playing, but never use oily hands. If it gets stained with grease, rinse it immediately with clean water and wipe it dry with a soft cloth.
- Avoid Dryness: Prolonged exposure to a dry environment will gradually cause jadeite to lose water, affecting its oily luster. This is one of the reasons why jade from the south often appears more lustrous than jade from the north. My experience is that jadeite not being worn can be soaked in clean water for a while periodically, or placed in an environment with moderate humidity. I usually use a well-sealed brocade box with a small cup of water inside to maintain a certain humidity.
- Avoid Random Cleaning: Do not use brushes or rough cloths to wipe jadeite, as this will damage its surface. When cleaning, simply wipe gently with a clean soft cloth (such as a spectacle cloth). If deep cleaning is required, you can gently wash it with neutral soapy water (such as baby shower gel), then rinse with clean water, and wipe dry with a soft cloth.
Precautions:
* Regular Inspection: Develop the habit of regularly inspecting your jadeite for new scratches, cracks, or color changes. Once a problem is found, deal with it promptly.
* Separate Storage: Jadeite should be stored separately to avoid friction and damage from other harder jewelry. I usually prepare a separate brocade box for each piece of jadeite, lined with silk or velvet.
* 'Jade Nurtures People, People Nurture Jade': Wearing it is the best maintenance. The oils and sweat secreted by the human body, when clean, have a moisturizing effect on jadeite, making its color more gentle and its luster more subtle. But remember, it must be 'clean' sweat and oils.
Experience Summary:
Ultimately, jadeite maintenance boils down to 'carefulness.' It is not a cold object, but a spiritual stone with vitality. If you treat it well, it will naturally reward you with a warm luster and charming appeal. All these experiences of mine have been accumulated through countless heartaches and learning. I hope they are helpful to all fellow collectors. Remember, collecting jade is not just about owning, but about caring for and passing it on. Only in this way can your jadeite truly radiate its due brilliance and become a cherished treasure passed down through generations in your hands.
I wish all fellow collectors happy jade playing and eternal youth for their collections!
